We all know sitting too much is not good for you. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) has become a prevalent illness in many workplaces and has now creeped into our homes as well.
WMSD are characterised by discomfort, impairment, disability, or persistent pain in the joints, muscles, tendons or other soft tissues. They are the most common work-related illness in many workplaces. WMSD can result in increased costs, such as disruption in productivity and quality, worker replacement costs, training and absence costs. It has become a major concern for many companies because of the negative impact on the health and productivity of employees.
It is therefore a significant problem for both employers and workers to pay attention to. As many people spend a significant amount of time on personal computers at work, learning the proper way to sit, the good habits to adopt, and the preferred ergonomic placement of office equipment, can help to prevent undesirable health problems such as headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain and other bodily aches.
In a recent study conducted by the Singapore General Hospital on the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) among office workers in Singapore, it was found that 73.4% of the survey respondents reported experiencing pain in at least one of the body parts. The prevalence of WMSD in females (78.8%) is higher as compared to males (63.9%).
